The Economic and Social Council and the Peacebuilding Commission will hold a joint meeting on building and sustaining peace in Haiti.
Robert Rae (Canada) President of the Economic and Social Council, and Thomas Zahneisen (Germany), Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission, will chair the meeting.
The meeting presents an opportunity to examine Haiti’s urgent peacebuilding and sustainable development needs, with a particular focus on measures to address community-level peacebuilding and violence reduction, including the role of women and youth.
The meeting will identify ways to support Haitian efforts through the lens of a comprehensive package of non-military interventions to address the security situation and help advance peacebuilding priorities.
General Assembly President Philémon Yang (Cameroon) and Security Council President for June, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett (Guyana), will give opening remarks.
Dorvil Morency, Municipal Commissioner of the Haitian National Police; Corinne Cathala, Country Director for Haiti of the Inter-American Development Bank; Bertha Pierre, a civil society representative of Haiti; and María Isabel Salvador, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti; will speak during the panel discussion. Afterwards, Elizabeth Spehar, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, will address the panel and Mr. Zahneisen will give closing remarks.
