27 Feb 2021, 14:18 GMT+10

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Haitian authorities said Friday that 25 people died during a prison breakout at the Croix-des-Bouquets prison near the capital on Thursday, according to local media.

Among those killed were the head of the prison and Arnel Joseph, who was allegedly head of one of Haiti's main criminal networks and was arrested in 2019.

The police have managed to arrest 69 inmates escaping from the prison, and are still searching for some 200 inmates who remain at large.

Haitian President Jovenel Moise tweeted on Friday that he condemned the jailbreak and asked people to remain calm, adding that the National Police had been "instructed to take all measures to bring the situation under control."
