LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Aug. 8(PIA)- - Wearing of face shield as a measure to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 is now required in the municipality.

Mayor Romeo Salda issued Executive Order 161 s. 2020 which requires that effective August 10, 2020, all persons in public areas and transport, employees of both private and government offices, bank establishments, department stores, public markets, groceries, satellite markets or talipapa, hardware, sari-sari stores, and individuals transacting businesses at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post, Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center and other private trading areas should wear face shields and face masks.

The mayor issued the directive following the recent surge of COVID-19 positive cases in the municipality, with 46 at present out of the 89 total recorded cases in the province of Benguet.

The use of face shields and masks considerably reduces exposure to and emission of respiratory droplets, thus the need to require the use of both protective gears, the EO stated.

According to medical experts, wearing a face mask not only curbs the spread of the coronavirus but reduces a mask wearer's risk of catching the virus by 65%. Furthermore, wearing a face shield reduces the inhalational exposure of the worker by 96% in the period immediately after a cough. The face shield also reduces the surface contamination of a respirator by 97%. If social distancing is observed, risk infection is reduced by 99.9%,

Salda said while the local government acknowledges that said that the added requirement will incur some cost to the people, no amount of protection is too much when it comes to health and safety since the face shield adds an extra layer of protection against Covid-19. (JDP/RMC-PIA CAR)
