Death toll from Haiti quake reaches 150,000
Haiti News.Net Monday 25th January, 2010 (IANS)
Port-au-The Haitian government raised the confirmed death toll from this month's devastating earthquake to 150,000 late Monday.
Officials said they fear the death toll could be as high as 200,000 in Jan 12's magnitude-7 quake.
The government also said it plans to block off portions of the ruined capital Port-au-Prince to allow ruins and debris to be cleared away and new structures to be built.
Residents should go to their home provinces if possible to aid the reconstruction, said Jean Baleme Mathurian, an economic advisor to Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.
Some 40,000 people have already left the city to return to villages where they have family ties, he said.
On Monday, foreign ministers met in Montreal to map out an aid plan for Haiti. Bellerive called for more aid, but made clear that Haiti wants to guide the process and develop its own vision of rebuilding the shattered capital Port-au-Prince and outlying areas. Email this story to a friend

Death toll from Haiti quake reaches 150,000
Its horrifying, the earthquake and the after shocks have done to the people of haiti. I always wished if there was some early warning system which could potentially save hundreds of lives, though I realize there is not predictable way of anticipate an earthquake.
I was looking for such predictions systems and came up with a few articles and interesting tools
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN09481162._CH_.2400?rpc=64
There is a program called Quake Warn (http://www.purplehazeapps.com/home/) for the iPhone (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=325439409&mt=8&s=143441), which works by pushing a message of nearest earthquakes as it happens and gets recorded in the USGS database. It might probably give a few seconds early warning to escape from the falling debris, if one happens to be far enough from the epicenter as the seismic wave takes a a finite time to travel from the epicenter.
Hope these info helps someone.
