Haitian language offers insight
Grief for Haiti quickly turned to contempt for a country of poverty-stricken victims of the greatest tragedy in the country’s history, but there is more to this nation than destruction and underdevelopment and a Haitian-born teacher, who now lives in the US is doing something to try and show this fact.
Haiti has become a country known only for the devastation that was wrought by the January 12th earthquake, a date now infamous in the media. In the wake of the destruction, there was an outpouring of concern and grief followed by condemnation of the country for its third world ways and the inability of government to deal with the chaos and devastation. It is therefore no wonder that certain unique kinds of environmental, cultural, adventure and historical tourism have begun to develop in Haiti. When at Dame Marie and further down the coast in Anse d'Hainault, you get the distinct impression that you are at the end of the earth. And you are. Hiking outside these towns you are as remote and cut off from the digital world as you would be in Timbuktu.
